In the churchyard at Süderende there is a stone that brags. It belongs to Matthias Petersen of Oldsum, born in 1632, and it records without embarrassment that by common consent he took the name "the Lucky One" - because in fifty years commanding whaling ships he brought home three hundred and seventy-three whales. He is not alone. The graveyards around Föhr's three medieval churches are crowded with sprekende Steene, speaking stones, carved with entire lives: the ships, the voyages, the children who lived and the children who did not. The reason is specific: for two hundred years this eighty-square-kilometre island sent its men to the edge of the Arctic, and had the money to say so in stone.
