Across the marshes between the Elbe and the Eider, the tallest thing on the horizon has always been a church tower, and in country this flat you can see one from ten kilometres away. That absence is the whole story. For roughly three centuries the peasants who farmed this coast answered to no duke, no count and no bishop; when they needed to decide something, they walked to church and decided it. Dithmarschen had a written law code, a high court, a militia, and a seat in the Hanseatic trading world - and it took the King of Denmark until 1559 to bring it to an end.
