Somebody stood in this canyon more than ten thousand years ago with pigment on their hands and left a mark on the rock that is still there. Not a scratch — a composition, in colours chosen and repeated across walls, in cave after cave. Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park protects 56,448 hectares of dry limestone country in the north of Minas Gerais, and the geology alone would justify the fence. What makes the place hold you is the other thing: people were living in these caves, painting them, and burying their dead in them for most of the time humans have been in South America.
