Walk into most large Brazilian caves and the ceiling drips with mineral - curtains, columns, the slow calcite architecture of a hundred thousand slow years. Caverna dos Ecos has none of it, and the absence is the whole point. This is a cave cut into mica schist, a glittering metamorphic rock that does not dissolve and redeposit the way limestone does, so there is simply nothing to build a formation out of. What the cave offers instead is bare rock, a descent of 142 metres, and, at the bottom of it, a lake.
