The name is a burn scar. Caucaia comes from Tupi - ka'a, forest, and kai, to burn - and it means burned woodland, or simply burned. What grew back on that ground is now the second most populous municipality in Ceara, with 375,679 people counted in the 2022 census, wedged against Fortaleza's western edge and running out to a coast where the wind blows hard enough to make kitesurfers plan their year around it. Suburbs of the capital, an industrial deepwater port, and Indigenous villages older than the city all share the same map here, and they do not always share it comfortably.
