The Canudos you can drive to is the third town of that name. The first was leveled and burned by the Brazilian Army in October 1897. People came back and rebuilt on the ruins, and the second Canudos stood for seventy years, until the Cocorobó Dam went up across the Vaza-Barris and the water came over it. The reservoir was finished in December 1967, holds 245 million cubic meters and covers 2,395 hectares, and it genuinely does supply drinking water and irrigation to one of the driest inhabited parts of Brazil. It also put a lake on top of a massacre site — a coincidence very few Brazilians have been willing to read as one. Nineteen years after the water rose, the state of Bahia created a park on the dry ground just south of the reservoir, and wrote the reason into the paperwork.
