The drilling rig had already made history once, and once had not been enough. In January 1939 it stood at Lobato, a district on the northern edge of Salvador, and brought up the first oil ever found in Brazil. The country celebrated, and then the celebration cooled, because Lobato's oil could not be worked at a profit. It was a discovery, not a business. Two years later the same machine was hauled roughly twenty-five kilometres north into the scrub of the Recôncavo, outside the town of Candeias, and set turning again. On 13 December 1941 it found oil a second time. This time the oil paid.
