Three hundred and forty metres of open air wait below, and the water simply never arrives. An updraft coming off the valley wall catches the stream partway down, shreds it, and pushes it back as vapour. Lie on your stomach at the rim, push your head over the drop, and you can watch your own river drift upward past your face. Bahians call it Cachoeira da Fumaça, the Smoke Falls, and for most of the year that is a description rather than a metaphor.]]></description>
