Cabo de Santo Agostinho: Introduction

Cabo de Santo Agostinho is a volcanic extrusion pushed out into the Atlantic, and geologists identify it as the last point of rupture between South America and Africa - the final hinge of Gondwana, the place the two landmasses held on longest before the ocean got between them. Stand on the cliffs at the tip and the Atlantic in front of you is the youngest part of that ocean's story. Behind you, thirty-five kilometres north, is Recife. In between is a coastline of dark volcanic rock, coconut palms, and one of the busiest industrial ports in northeastern Brazil.
