Home from an exhibition in New York, he spent two months in Brodowski, had a small chapel raised beside the family house, and painted the whole of it himself — saints at life size in tempera, their faces lifted from the people of the household. On the morning of 1 March 1941, Padre Francisco Siino said the first Mass inside it, before the family, a handful of friends, the local newspaperman and a small delegation down from Ribeirão Preto. The grandson was Cândido Portinari. Within a dozen years he would be painting murals for the United Nations.]]></description>
