The two figures pulled out of a peat bog at Braak in 1947 are not small — the male stands 2.75 metres, the female 2.30 — and they were never meant to be seen the way they are seen now, upright under museum light in Schleswig. They are oak, cut from naturally forked branches chosen because the fork already suggested a pair of legs. Their arms are gone; only the sockets remain. Small stones may once have sat in the eyes. Somewhere between four hundred and two hundred years before the common era, someone in northern Germany made a man and a woman out of trees and set them beside a fire in a wetland. Nobody can now tell you why.
