Belterra, Pará: Introduction

Henry Ford never once set foot in Brazil, but he owned 10,000 square kilometers of it for more than two decades, and he spent roughly 20 million dollars trying to grow American-owned rubber inside the Amazon rainforest. His first attempt, Fordlandia, opened in 1928 on a site chosen mostly because the timber company that sold it to him wanted to unload it. The place failed spectacularly. So in the early 1930s, Ford's engineers moved 100 kilometers north and started again, on a flat plateau above the Tapajos River where the soil was better and the terrain permitted the use of machinery. They named the new plantation Belterra.
