A long civic decree, carved to honour a citizen named Orthagoras, is the only source that tells us what happened here in the second century BC — and what it tells us is that Araxa spent that century being raided. The site lies in south-western Turkey, at a village called Ören near Fethiye, high up the valley of the Xanthus. Nothing on the ground announces the place. The stone did all the announcing.
