Ranchers came in from Minas Gerais, Goiás and Mato Grosso and gathered under the trees of what is now Praça Rui Barbosa in central Araçatuba, and there, weekly, they argued out the value of the arroba, the fifteen-kilo unit Brazilian cattle are still traded in. Nothing was electronic and very little was even written down. Figures went into notebooks in pencil or were sealed by word alone, on the understanding that a man who broke his word in that square would not be doing business in it again. The nickname stuck in the 1950s and has never come off: Capital do Boi Gordo, capital of the fat cattle. Araçatuba is a city of over 200,000 people now, with universities and a gas pipeline and an airport, and it is still known nationally for a market that ran on handshakes.
