There were buffaloes on a farm out past the edge of town, the caller said - at least five hundred of them - and they had nothing to eat and no water to drink. Officers drove out to Fazenda São Luiz da Água Sumida, a property straddling the boundary between Brotas and Ribeirão Bonito in the interior of São Paulo state. What they found was worse than the call had suggested. The herd numbered more than a thousand. Many of the animals were female and pregnant. And someone had been running a tractor across the pasture.
